STURGEON report! 9-14th through 16th
#1
[black]Fished with slayerace and his life-time friend Larry. Lost trailer tire and rim on the way up and lost the spare tire and rim on the way back. Found out that the world has moved on to five-hole rims and I am blessed with four-hole rims. Had the trailer towed to Inlaws in Twin Falls. Will be making a turn and burn trip to pick it up. Another tent was destroyed by the wind. On sturgeon trips thus far, that makes two tents destroyed, one tent blown in the water and one tent blown away about 75 yards (fortunately for me, mine was the one that was blown into the water and it suffered minimal damage). [black]All three of us caught the largest fish of our lifetimes! Here are the vitals of what we caught:[/black][/black]

Here are a few more pics..I will try to post a video of Kent fighting his monster. It was quite a feat, not only did he fight a 218 pounder but at the same time defeated 30 mph winds that were blowing in the opposite direction of a very strong current! It was pretty tough keeping that fish out from under the boat.

Nice going Kent!
...but I think there is a typo in your post...it says "90 inches 219 pounds" [Wink]!!!!!

That is one huge fish! The best analogy that I could come up with is that I am 74 inches and 215 pounds. So I imagined catching myself if I were over a foot taller! Nice job fighting the weather also!
Did that meet your goal this year or were you after even bigger than that?

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

To answer some questions. Yes, it jumped once, and we had several other fish jump. No really great head shakes and tail slapping jumps this trip though. Goal this year was 8', so I fell 6" short. I heard from my fishing buddy who lives up there and he lost one that went over 10' earlier this year, in the same area that we fish, so there are definitely bigger ones to be caught. In three years of fishing that area we caught one that was about 3' long, other than that about the shortest has been 42 inches or so.

The place i fish has(or had 4 years ago) alot of 2-4'ers. I'de say 60% were in that range, but there were alot of fish from 6' to 9' if they were in the other 40%. Man i want to go now! Thanks for the report, it will help a little.[cool]

We fish around the Mountain Home area -- long drive but worth it if one wants to be able to fish for sturgeon from their own boat.

Holy Moly, now you've got me going! I love catching BIG fish. I'm real curious, do the sturgeon reproduce in the fresh water? I guess the answer must be yes, since planting would probably not be practical, and I understand the sturgeon are trapped in the river. We fished for them in the Sacramento River when I lived there years ago, but they migrated down to the saltwater to spawn there, the reverse of stripers and salmon.

Wow, I'm jealous, I'll have to make it up there to do that one day. Way to go you guys.

They only naturally reproduce in a few areas in The Snake River. They do plant some sturgeon in Idaho.

Way to go Kent!! Glad you guys caught some fish. Did you try any new exotic bait?? You might consider buying a new axle for your trailer. I wanted bigger size tires on my boat trailer because I sometimes pull it behind my 5th wheel. The wider tires make it pull better. Anyway I just got a new axle at Henderson's the right length and with the type of wheels I wanted. It seems like the axle was $130.00 then you have to buy new tires and rims. I can't think of a better way to spent money than on a boat...LOL

I tried a Mantua perch and Randy caught a sucker and I tried fishing with a chunk off of it. I think I got one bite on the sucker and nada on the perch. No more trips for me up there if the weather forecast looks like a low front is coming through. Makes for difficult fishing in the cold and the wind and the fish don't seem to be as interested in biting.

What kind of tackle did you use? Rod, reel, line, hooks, etc?

Penn Leveline 350 reels, heavy rods (not the broom sticks with a roller, but heavy rods that will handle heavy fish), and 80 pound Dacron fishing line.
