In the past I have ice fished Ashton Res. I usually fish fairly close to the dam, but if it isn't really cold the ice can be very unstable. I have tried fishing farther back by the boat ramp but I have never done very well. I would warn anyone who tries to fish Ashton that it is very unstable and can kill. The dam moves the water around and so it may seem thick enough in one place and a few feet away it can be really thin. I do know that a guy went through the ice last year and he was just lucky that other ice fishermen were close enough to save him. So if you go try to find out how to catch them further North where the ice is safer. For the record I have never taken a really large fish there although I did see an eight lb brown taken a few years back.

Good luck and be safe

I normally ice fished Ashton a once or twice a year but haven't made time to fish it the last two winters. It is just to far to drive from Pocatello when I can catch just as many but larger fish closer to home About 10 years ago the larger browns weren't as uncommon. I've only iced one brown out of there in the last five years. I've also iced a couple smaller kokanee but most of the catch is made up of smaller rainbows (8"-12"). There are a few larger rainbows in there but they aren't as common. The area around the dam has the greatest concentration of fish as well as fishermen. If I were to fish it tomorrow I would use smaller tub jigs or smaller ice flies. There is going to be some open water next to the dam and a light current under the ice so be careful walking on the ice.
