Lincoln Beach Report 10-30
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Got up an informal BFT floatation flotilla for this morning. Out4Trout was waiting for me and TubeBabe when we pulled into the launch area at 7 AM. I suspect he had been there waiting all night.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fairwayphilly pulled in right behind us and we all got our cold weather gear on in the parking area under the bright lights and headed for the first spring to get launched.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I started my anti-W dance last week. It worked. Hardly a puff of breeze or a ripple on the water until we started preparing to get off the water about 12:30. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Air temp was about 35 at launch and water temp was about 42. It had cooled off about 10 degrees from our last trip, two weeks ago. That seemed to have the fish moving close in to the shoreline near the spring inflows. Most of the fish taken were in shallow water. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I was the first one launched and had taps on my first three casts. On the fourth, I felt a live "backpressure" and set the hook firmly. Line peeled off the drag on my small baitcaster and I got whupped pretty good by the "dorsal diner" carp. It was a mirror carp, with only a few scales.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The other floatin' fanatics weren't far behind me into the water and Phil got to play with another buglemouth. Then, it was TubeBabe's turn, only her fish was inexperienced and didn't know how to hang on. However, she did bring a decent white bass to the tube, to score the first "desirable" species.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Oh yeah, Iconoclastic Paul (formerly WalleyePaul) also showed up to join the pursuit. He left early and I do not know how he scored. I know he missed a couple of good hits while I was near him.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We all moved around, trying to find some willing wallies. No go. Then, walleyebob and Brad pulled up in the old blue bomber and advised that they had been catching fish later in the day and after dark. Probably something to do with the weather or the moon. Any excuseis better than none.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Bob's years of experience and recent trips to the lake put them on a spot that they had been doing well. They took several walleyes over a period of a couple of hours, and Bob lost a big ol' biggun right at the net.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Then it was my turn. I had stretched my string out pretty good on several carp before I finally felt the characteristic thump of a munching walleye. I set the hook and rassled in a reasonably healthy 23" wallie. The next fifty casts to the same area got zilch. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]TubeBabe and I kicked our way slowly up to an area we had found fish two weeks earlier. There was one left over. TubeBabe scored a skinny 22 incher. But, it made her just as happy as a much bigger fish would have. However, it only weighed 3 pounds, whereas my fish, one inch longer, weighed 4.6 pounds.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fairwayphilly hung with us for awhile, and worked the water to a froth. Then he used the electric trolling motor on his 'toon to fish way on down to the west. He was just coming back in as we pulled out to go home, so I don't know how he finished for the day.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Geoff (O4T) put in a mighty effort. In fact, we really could all learn by his example. He released every fish he hooked today. Some of them after only a few seconds. Others he kept on for several minutes before arranging a long line release. They may have been carp. But, then again, if you don't get to see them, they can be anything you want them to be.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]TIP: The "regulars" are fishing the outlets of the first two springs in close and catching a few white bass. The ones who did best were throwing small chartreuse tube jigs. In fact they caught a couple of nice walleye on them too. Later, a guy was hanging a small jig about three feet under a bobber and picking up a few whities also.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There were quite a few mudcats taken in the warm outflow of the spring today, but I did not see any channels. Walleyebob said that someone fishing off the point yesterday, with leeches below a bobber, caught a couple of walleye, some white bass, two largemouths and a channel cat.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]All in all, a fun day for we of the floatation persuasion. Northwest wind was just starting to build when we left. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Trick or Treat and Happy Halloween to BFTers.[/#0000ff]

It was a beautiful day to be out on Lincoln Beach... yeah I had lots of bites but failed to bring it in... so it kinda sucked for me... and that is NOT why I hadda leave early, if I could I would have stayed all day through the evening hours. I had to leave because my kids wanted me to take them to a halloween event that early afternoon. What a blast my kids had!

I threw all kinds of stuff at white bass, LMB, walleyes and cats, and they all nibbled, but wouldn't munch down hard.
I had my two pole permit, and was kicking myself for leaving a rod holder at home. I had one rod for worms (Cats and whoever wants a worm (hey fishies, its trick or treat time! I guess it was not a top notch candy nor a top-notch worm either, as it is a cheap garden variety I dug up...) and the 2nd rod for spinners and cranks for white bass, and walleyes. None of them worked well for me.

I noticed walleye bob and Brad did extremely well. I was shocked to see their boat on the lake and inquired how they got the contraption on the lake when the rocks were rather visable in the harbor... Bob mentioned they launched a half a mile up the road on a dirt road and pushed out. I think I will try that next time.

I had a minor problem which is my wader in the shoe area, there's a tiny leak that caused my feet to freeze abit. I suspect another problem, its the old ski socks which felt kinda tight which cut off circulation of blood in my feet. Kinda hurts so I hung close to the first spring to keep my feet warm LOL... A man has to improvise...[cool]

There was two orientals who caught tons of fish, including one huge walleye that I swear looked more than 9 pounds! They left as I suspect they limited out easily!

[#0000ff]We would have enjoyed your company, but the truth is that the fishing was not that great. The fish were in a small area and there was no room for a lot of anglers. In fact every time several people tried to gang up on them, the fish left or quit biting. Only after resting the spot for awhile was Walleye Bob able to resume catching a fish now and again.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It is very specialized fishing right now. This is the time of year when the experienced locals do well, while others do not. Some people will get fish, but others will only leave frustrated. I was only one good bite away from being blanked on walleyes myself.[/#0000ff]

Final Score: Utah Lake 3 - Fairway 0.

Three straight trips to LB without a single netted walleye. Had one very close call, but nothing on the table. Each trip has resulted in one white bass early in the day and three foul hooked carp. Landed two carp, one hooked behind the gill a 5 lber and one in the dorsal fin, a 7 lber and lost one hooked in the tail.
I floated around the point from the second spring and into the mouth of the third, went as far into it as my toon would take me and found a 4 degree bump in temp; thought for sure that I would come across and eye looking for a warm bath, but nada. It was good to see everyone again, but it would sure be nice to have a floatilla on a day when everyone is knocking them dead. Oh well, still better than a day of work.

[cool]Saturday was a lot of fun, and frustration at the same time, but it definitely beat work! Thanks for dragging my tube and I back to the car, Pat. I know the fishing was tough though, if "the infamous one" only caught one Walleye, then I don't feel so bad for not landing one. I had three involuntary releases and they were all within an hour of arriving there. We'll have better luck next time.

Looks like you all had some fun while I was away losing my money. Glad you got into some fish. Wonder how things will pan out the next couple days we have with some good weather.

Great report as always.

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you made it back from "Lost Wages". Hope you had a good time.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If the weather stabilizes and the water gets a bit cleaner, then fishing should resume on pace. You can still catch a few in the chocolate after a big blow, but it's better if there is some visibility. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Walleyes are efficient predators in murky water and full dark. Their sensitive lateral line, together with their exceptional low light vision, allows them to feed under almost any conditions.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Keep looking for fish near warm water inflows, near spring outlets. Fish light heads and big plastics, and fish them slow. Fast moving stuff on heavy heads will not get much except snagged carp right now. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Use solid dark colors, like black or purple. Or, even better, use two tone plastics with contrasting top and bottom colors. Black and chartreuse, Blue and chartreuse and purple and chartreuse have all been producing. Don't overlook an old favorite, black and white. Can't ask for more contrast and in real murky water it can be a good choice.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Larger 3" to 5" twisters and swim baits, on 1/16 oz. heads (2/0 or 3/0 hooks), have been doing better than the small stuff. They stay up out of the rocks better and present a bigger silhouette for fish in murky water. You will get a lot of taps from inquisitive white bass, but there will be no mistaking the solid thump of an interested walleye.[/#0000ff]

Looks like you had a good time, but then I would expect nothing less. Luckily I didn't have too much time to gamble in Vegas, because the little I did was just donations. But I was thinking of you guys and gals. Is anyone going out this weekend? Al

Way ta Go TB..
It just so happens that (by way of binoculars) I happen to see that eye slide into the net.
I also seen a rod bent a couple times in Bobs blue.

But from what I seen last Saturday round 11:00am while standing next to my old puddle jumper above the spring there was a lot more fishing than catching taking place. So,, even if I show up I'd have to say my money is on TB for the LB flotilla catch of the weekend again next weekend if she attends.

BTW TB, how's about sharing your eye secrets with me!?

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Don, TB is playin' mom and grandma over in California this week and is "computer deprived". I will attempt to answer for her. Of course, my answer may be slanted, so she may issue a correction when she returns.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]My theory is that besides being a pretty fine fisherperson, in her own right, she owes much of her success to having a good guide. That guide makes her rods and lures, and keeps her gear in good condition. He also keeps her advised, by walkie talkie, as to where the fish are and how to fish them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]What I can't explain is how she does everything contrary to what I tell her (woman) and still catches fish. Even worse, she sometimes catches more and/or bigger fish. But, since I still do all the filleting and fish cooking, she is smart enough not to rub it in too bad.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just for the record, I have caught more walleye than she has this year. Same for cats. But...on any given trip...[/#0000ff]

Hey Pat

I quote: "she may issue a correction"

I'm thinking she will issue an entire rebuttal. [laugh] [Wink]

As far as trying to explain how or why she out fishes ya continuosly, dont try. I've always figured its simply a fact of nature that fish (big or small) would rather be caught by the ladies. Maybe its their softer and prettier hands???

[#0000ff]Speakin' of which, we need to try again on gettin' together and gangin' up on some of those toothy critters.[/#0000ff]

[cool]Wow, 1041 views of your first post on this thread! You really are "the infamous one" aren't you, Pat? Not that I always keep track of that nerdy stuff, but that is the most views that I can ever recall noticing on any thread or post on this board. Looks like the BFT UTAH board is getting pretty popular!

I guess another way we can look at it is, there's a ton of guests that still refuse to register, and only TAKE from this forum and not GIVE a little something back[pirate]. Oh well, their loss, I guess. They are the ones that miss out on the excellent comraderie that exists here.[Tongue][Tongue]
