Blackfoot
#1
Took a day off yesterday and hit Blackfoot res. Took the road through bone hoping it would be snow free. Sure enough, it had been plowed and is already dusty. Tried all my favorite bank spots and caught a few rainbows at each. Worms and green mallows worked but sucker meat worked the best. The lake is nearly full and fairly clean. And no wind yesterday. It was wonderful.

Thanks for the report. Do you know if the road is open to Rich Lane in Blackfoot?

I want to try my new bank jaw jacker for 6'6" poles that I came up with. It uses a trigger made for Ice fishing made by KESCO products that holds your rod tip. it is called a "Quickset". I think I got three Qwicksets for under $5.00. The rest will be 1" pvc. I will post pictures when I get it made and results of my first test at Blackfoot Res. See the trigger at www.quicksetfishing.com

I would assume the road from Blackfoot is open too. Not sure though. The Blackfoot reservoir road had been plowed or I don’t think it would have been passable. Quite a bit of snow left on top. No snow at the lake though.

Last week it was still closed. Me and my gal friend are going to drive up tomorrow just to check. I'm sure you could get over the mountain at Fort hall casino if not. I will post what I find. I can't wait to get up there. I haven't been for a couple years.

I drove up about half way to Blackfoot Reservoir, past the spot that usually drifts and closed the road and there is no snow. They are grading the road now. Looking at the weather, I think I will wait until Friday to head up fishing.

Is the perch fishing any good there?

I didn't know it had perch there. It has Cutthroat, Rainbows, suckers and lots of carp. I'm going for Rainbow.

Ok, was just wondering. Saw it had them in there on fish and games website. Looking to explore a few more waters this summer and would rather catch panfish, but not oppsed to catching trout occasionally. Thanks for the info.

I know exactly what you mean. I am the same way. I just finished a catfish dinner I went to Utah to get. But those big rainbow at Blackfoot Reservoir are way fun and good eating. They are big enough and easy to fellet all the bones out so you end up with three nice boneless pieces from each side.
Do you get over by Preston? There is some real good large mouth bass ponds over there and they have perch and blue gill in some. Let me know and I will list some for you.

I'm gonna try and get over that way sometime this summer, I'm looking at Oneida and Twin lakes, haven't ever caught a small mouth or crappie and would like to. Big trout are fun to catch and wouldn't mind getting a few, I just smoke them in the oven, might have to add Blackfoot to my list too.

Good choices. I caught a nice large mouth through the ice at Twin this winter. I heard Condie is real good for large mouth. I'm going to try and hit some of them myself. Good luck.

We have caught a few perch in front of the dam while ice fishing. Pretty small though, most were 5 to 6 inchers. Never been in a boat up there. I’m sure you could find some with decent electronics. I go for the fat rainbows!

Guess I'll have to go for the fat rainbows, I don't mind catching them, I just turn them loose. Don't have a boat, might get a few perch fishing for trout.

You get a hold of a blackfoot bow you won't want to mess around with the perch... Been a couple years, but Twin had some really nice sized perch, they just have such screwy rules for boats and all that I quit fishing it... Too bad that was my favorite pond... Later J

I didn't know you get up this way Jeff. If you do come up, let me know. I have a spare bedroom for any BFT member that needs it. I'm an hour away from the Reservoir. And two hours from Henry's.
I didn't know about the perch. I have some perch bait chunks in the freezer I'll take with me. And a chunk of Utah Lake carp meat. I've been trying to catch a sucker on the Snake River and can't catch one.
But check out my Blackfoot Reservoir post in a while. I was getting ready to tell the way I usually bait fish there.
