carp on the fly
#21
I'm digging those bread and popcorn flies. There really are times and places where that sort of thing can work wonders.

They definitely fight like crazy when you snag them. Last spring I was looking for smallmouth and walleye on The Bear up in Idaho when I accidentally snagged this beast on a jig.[inline "carp small.JPG"]

It took off about 100 feet of line on it's first run and was still going when I decided I was going to have to chase it. It took at least ten minutes and 100 yards before I was able to net it. That was using a medium fast action spinning rod. I can only imagine if I had been using my fly rod at the time.

The mirror carp really seem to be a lot more prevalent in Cache Valley and southeast Idaho than down in Utah and Salt Lake counties. They probably make up a good 35-45% of the carp that I catch here. I will have to try them on the fly again this year, it really is a lot of fun.

I agree with the number of mirrors in the Bear River drainage. I was thinking more like 50% mirrors.

Why is it that the carp get harder to catch when you try to catch them! [blush] I may have to go back to trying for other species just so I can get one on the bank again. [laugh][laugh]

I have been fishing for cats after the ice off till ice on. So long as the weather is good I can be found there a couple times a week trying to fill my freezer! Never fish Echo..Does it have cats? Willard is only 15 minutes from my house so its easy.

I caught a whole slew of cats there when I was a kid. I kill the smallies there in the summer. Have not fished for cats there in a long time. I do catch some bi standard cats while jigging for small mouth. I like hittin the carp on a fly at echo as well. What is your favorite cat bait at willard?

Chub meat works well. As does carp meat. Only caught a few smallies. I bank fish and dont cover much water. I do keep my eyes open in the fall for Wiper boils. Caught a limit or two that way.Kastmaster rigged on a spare pole alway ready.

I cought a few last year in PineView when I was up there trying to get a tiger to take a fly. Man, that was the first time I ever had a carp on a fly rod and boy do they fight. Definatly comparable to Skipjacks I caught in Tonga with a 8 wt Fly Rod...
