Haha... I just got done typing/sending you a PM about our trip up there next week not a minute or two before you posted.
The zerk on the end of the spindle is for forcing grease to the inner bearing. Way better system than the old spring loaded bearing buddy set-ups. Technically one can completely re-pack the bearings without ever taking the hub off with this set-up. (Not advised but "could" be done.) One just has to plug in the grease gun and pump it 20-40 times to force all the old grease out through the front.
I guess being naive. First boat, only a few years old, etc. Not tearing down the hubs for a full annual looksie got me. I greased often/inspected but didn't tear apart/inspect internally annually. Now that I know the whole bearing system inside and out and how easy it is to tear down, inspect, etc I will be doing that a whole lot more often...
