On / Off Switch for toon motor

I did just as you describe and I tried every switch radio shack had and they all overheated or down right melted. They couldn't handle the draw even the biggest 50 amp they had. I ended up with an on/off light switch mounted to a pvc concoction I can stick in the pouch next to me. That switch is now 4 or 5 years old and works perfectly for what we do.
