Rivers End Tackle Report
#21
Fishing Report -- August 15, 2014
Striped Bass - We're about at the dog days of a slow bass season right now. Some bass are showing up at Plum Gut both for drifters working the rip and by casters who are picking some up by throwing into the Island rocks. Cornfield has seen a few for live bait drifters. Six Mile Reef has some small bait and squid thats holding some medium sized bass mixed in with the blues.
Bunker is still thick in the mouth of the Connecticut River despite the muddy conditions. There's no shortage of baitfish both big and small.

Bluefish - We always hear exaggerated sizes of blues this time of year but some very credible sources are regularly talking about blues in the high teen range both from shore and boat. The Lower Connecticut River has been one of those consistent spots but Six Mile and Southwest have also had some slammers. Plum Gut has picked up this week and we've heard of some action in the Sluiceway.
The WICC Bluefish Contest is scheduled for August 23-24. You can sign up here until 7pm on August 22.

Snapper Blues - Good action at the DEP Piers and estuaries leading into the Connecticut River. Some are approaching 5".

Sea Bass - Good reports coming in from Montauk and Block with no specifics. Those are big areas. Cerebus Shoal has also been good. Most reports we've heard have been incidental catches while fluking.

Fluke - Reports slowed this week mostly due to weather. The best news we've heard was good spike in the Connecticut River before the heavy rain. That might put them down for awhile and hopefully they'll spring back. There's a lot of small bait around and that might keep them closer to shore.
Good but vague reports have come in from Block And Montauk. The deep waters off Black Point and Hatchetts are giving up a few doormats if you have the patience to settle for a few hits a tide.
Will Ward is leading the Flat Out Fluke Contest with a 10.30 pounder

Blue Crabs - Fair to good action in the coves in the Lower Connecticut River. We should be hitting the peak of the season next week.

Porgies - Good reports of porgies at Bartletts, Hatchetts, Hens and Chickens. It's a good time to hit the smaller less pressured reefs.

Bonito - We've had a bunch of reports this week of bonito off Fishers and also spotting of frigate mackerel. These mackerel look like miniature bonito. There's also spotting of bay anchovies and that's good news for both bonito and albies.

Summer hours.

Mon - Fri 5am -- 7pm
Saturday 4am -- 6pm
Sunday 4am -- 5pm
