I wouldn't say USELESS. Cutting them out without popping them isn't too hard, but hooking them can be. I often end up with several destroyed eyes hanging shredded and limp on one hook. Hooking them at the back by the nerve attachment rather than through the iris and pupil helps. Putting them on a small salmon egg hook, you can kinda just roll the hook inside the eye, but that hides the hook point.
Generally, I find the hole where the nerve enters the eye, run the point inside and then out again quickly, minimizing damage.
