500 feet is longer than i run for any species of fish when i'm trolling. Longlining for trout in clear lakes i may go as far as 400 feet, but usually around 100 yards is plenty. At willow, i have had my best luck from 200 feet to 300 feet. Too much line out and your plug might get down further than you want it to. I stagger like you said, usually one about 220 and the other around 275 and truthfully i've had more hits on the short line, usually because it keeps the plug on the top....If you've ever seen Allan Cole down there he trolls a short line, about the equivalent of a really long cast......
