The crappie took a pretty good hit when they lowered the lake so they could work on the dam. They seem to be on the rebound though there were a lot of small crappies caught this year through the ice... hopefully it will get back to normal soon. (there are still a lot of crappies and big ones too but it is so flooded they have a lot of places to hide - makes targeting them difficult)
Good luck with barney fife - he's there to stay, if he was going to be run off it would have happened a long time ago.
People do use swimbaits around here although they are not as popular as other options. Problem with swimbaits in my opinion is that when they are effective, so are many other methods.
As for fishing the Gorge, I can't help you with the slimers and salmon, the bass are just like bass everywhere else. As for the burbot, get a hold of me late fall and into ice season I'll show you how to catch them by the cooler full.
