This is all academic. Utah has native fish. Man dams the rivers, pollutes the rivers, introduces non-native species and ruins the native populations of fish. The various government agencies try to manage the reservoirs as best as they can with what they have. I.E. the amount of water, stocking of fish, and battling invasive species. With a dwindling budget.
The majority of fish we have are managed pretty well considering they are not native and are in pretty different ecosystem then from whence they came. Bust? Boom? Of course. Utah is full of put and take fisheries. This is a desert. There are not supposed to be lakes where there are. Am I the only one that sees this? Blame it on the rain, mismanagement, what have ya. But the lakes aren't suppose to be there. We should be ALOT more thankful for what we do have.
As for the management... I believe we are all practicing Bucket Biologists on this one. Opinions mean nothing when it comes to the hard biology that is Utah. I am pretty happy for the moment on what is going on. But Utah is an ongoing project. Unless you are fishing a Native water with nothing but native species is there ever a decent balance. And I wouldn't mind catching native Cutthroat Trout, but the various Suckers, Humpback Chub, and Razorback minnows that were native wouldn't be quite as exciting.[laugh].
