Sounds like you are doing something right, and not the other way around. You just have some very active fish. Bass often will hit on the initial fall. In fact, many techniques require taking the lure out of the water after that initial fall. This is what anglers who are flipping a jig do. You make a short flip. Then, you let the lure fall. If you don't get a hit you pull it out and flip to another spot.
Are you casting to shoreline? Is the lure falling, or are you simply retrieving before these fish hit?
