I agree. Except, the wet levis are going to have the same effect. In the water no difference.
The thing is, in a fast river you will do the same as you would with out waders. Lean back, feet first, and wait for slower place to get out.
I still think that deaths occur due to some other event happening.
I grew up swimming the snake and those undertows are scary for sure, but so is the first time in the ocean and being hit with a wave.
Another way to look at this, they use pools for people to rehabilitate because it equalizes the weight.
