Hey I say good on your friend. People need to get off their high horse and admit that spearfishing is a legal venue for enjoying the outdoors.
Right now it seems to me that there are not enough spearfishermen to hurt too much in the eco-system. Nice picture, and way to go I say.
Although I would agree that if he got 4 other really big fish that day . . . well that might be taking too many. It reminds me of a friend who shot 30 wood chucks one day, on the way into a stretch of river we fish that is a bit harder to get in to. Usually I would pop a couple of shots at one on the way in and laugh if I got it. Shooting one or two a trip didn't seem to hurt the population any, as we would only make it in there about two times a year. Well 12 years after his bloody killing spree, which I was not present for because I would haves stopped him, we still don't see hardly any wood chucks anymore. Sometimes too much damage can be done, and well then that's the end.
I have nothing against spearfishing, but with any kind of fishing/hunting showing restraint at times is greatly needed.
