What caliber do you use for Elk?

That last story sounds much like the one I had 8 years ago but I was armed with a 338 win and ended up killing it with my wifes 270 it was a 5x5 bull and 6 210 grain bullets hit in the chest cavity I would have finished it with the 338 but this bull acted like I had missed all 6 shots and then I shot 3 more with 130 grain 270. some things can be strange I would say that even with my first 6 shots in the chest cavity the first one did not do what it should and I have found that with all animals the first shot is critical otherwise there a real pain to put down...
