What caliber do you use for Elk?
#23
I watched my buddy shoot a cow last winter with a 25-06. He shot it six times and it never flinched. Just stood, and laid down, and got up and laid down. Abou five hundred yards away. We got it finally. One more shot to the head at fifty yards.
Caliber depends on distance. If you want to shoot Elk at five hundred yards you should shoot a minimum of .284. Preferably .30. If you limit yourself to 300 yards a 25-06 or .270 will do the job just fine if your shot placement is good.
I have killed Elk with a .270, .50 Muzzleloader and my TC .375 JDJ. I like the .375 JDJ. It kills Elk quite nicely at short range. I've had two Elk drop in their tracks and not even wiggle. Last winter I shot a cow at two hundred yards in the neck, quartering uphill away from me. I was trying for a head shot so no meat would be wasted. She never had a chance. The .375 blew a three inch hole but hit nothing vital. The shock from the bullet shut down her system and killed her instantly.
