IMHO,, I have to cast, no pun intended, my vote for 50:1 also.
For older engines, if a person is concerned about engine wear and so on, 40:1, even 35:1 or 30:1 will help provide a little better protection against internal wear. But you will get more exhaust smoke..
I have a 1943 Champion 5hp that runs like a little clock and has yet to be overhauled. I run 40:1 in it simply because of its age.. I'm far from a "tree hunger" so the little bit of extra smoke the higher oil to gas mixture creates dont bother me. And truly, its hardly noticeable
