Weekend #2! I tried to get out all week but could never make it! We planned on leaving at 630 this morning so i got up at 5 and walked my pup...by the time I got home i got bailed on by my huntin' buddies!
I went up anyway by myself with no dog...i still want to get my pup a lot better prepared before throwing her out there with the birds! About 300 yards down the ridge and I heard a grouse purring [
] I hurried the last few yards and a ruffed exploded from the brush, click...dud shell. That's what i get for trying to use up all my old shells haha! Another ruffed exploded a few seconds later and i flat out missed. I was MAD! haha
I went on my way and decided to drop down a little finger ridge real quick just to see what it looked like. I wasn't 50 yards down when i heard some scratching and saw a chicken peckin at a dead log. I stood still for a few minutes to get a bearing of where all the birds were at...then i made my move and started putting them up...i shot one and hurried and reloaded my top barrel and two more jumped...nailed them both! I was having a hard time finding one and i looked up and she was about 12" over my head on a pine branch, i had to grab her by the neck and wring it!
I walked back up to the main ridge and decided to just work my way back up on the other side of the ridge. About 50 feet away from my quad i was startled by a ruffie and smoked him about 20 yards out. What an awesome morning for grouse...4 birds in about an hour! I can not WAIT until my pup is ready for birds...she loves it when i bring home wings and hide them in fields for her to go find!
