Well lets just say you use a spinner bait lets say one of those that look like a jig with a big hook and a nice shinny spoon that flashes around when you reel it in. That usually stays about 6 inches under the top water.
SO example lets say you are fishing in waters that have no weeds or rocks and your reeling it in you just feel the lure dragging in the water and all the sudden it feels like it just slammed against a wall as if it was snagged that is usually one indication something just tried to gulp that lure. You just have to try and experience it. Just use many lures and feel how they drag in the water when you reel and jig them. Usually any thing that feels different out of the normal is a good indication that something is messing with it.
