Ice out is almost here on most of the lake trout waters and the big fish will be scattered through the water column and vulnerable to all kinds of tactics and all kinds of anglers.
If you're fortunate enough to catch one of the bigger fish, please consider releasing it. The only way we are going to be able to sustain trophy lake trout fishing in Colorado is if we all let the bigger ones go to grow. In most Colorado lakes it typically takes about 20 years for a lake trout to reach 20 lbs, and 10 years just to reach 30" and 10 lbs. They can live in excess of 50 years and have already grown to over 50 lbs in Blue Mesa. So, please let the bigger fish go and grow! These truly are fish of a lifetime, in more ways than one.
