Pitzen Knot
#13
[Smile]I was in troop 233. The scourage of the South Seattle boys.

A friend had a Beach Set Net permit.
You anchor one end of a 3/4" line on the beach and the other end goes out in the water and anchors to a large weight.
The net hangs off this line.
He always used a Bowline because its reputation is that it can always be untied.
Well, nearly always.
After a few tides and a lot of fish and seaweed etc got hung in that net and the pressure of the surging water pulled that Bowline tight.

It was the end of the Season and we had to get the net out of the water.
The Knot wouldnt budge. We couldn't budge it with a hammer.
We ran out of time and waded back to the beach.
We had to wait for one more tide to go by before we could get back out to the Anchor and untie the line. During that tide we came up with some sharpend pegs and a hammer to loosen up the coils.

I think that may be why the Sailors kept Fire Axe's by each door on a ship. To chop off a stubborn knot.
