I've tried the drop shot rig for lake trout a couple times. I've caught several small lakers (20", +/-2") but no large ones. I was using senkos and tub jigs. If you are going to fish with a plastic minnow on a drop shot rig make sure you select one that is designed to be jigged and not retrieved. I was rigging the weight(1/4 - 3/8oz) about 18" from the hook. Some of the fish were caught suspended after graphing them on the depth finder and some of the fish were caught on the bottom. Most of the fish took the lure as it was falling and would bite light enough that I would miss the bite if I didn't have a good feel of what the lure was doing.
