There are plenty of Hotels around. Just get something that is not too close to the beach or be prepared to pay a little more than expected.
As far as the fishing goes, there is still plenty of action. Just as JapanRon said he is an expert on Long Beach. I was going to Long Beach once in awhile. I have also spent some good times in San Pedro, Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica and Oxnard boats that go to the Channel Islands.
There are plenty of Piers to fish as well. My son and I have hit every pier from Newport Beach all the way up to Santa Barbara. There are also a few jetties along the way to hit as well.
The Jettys are kind of like fishing by the dam at Deer Creek. Nice big rocks but easy to get to the water.
