RECORDED: [Image: mssunny.gif] 67 ° [Image: blackSpacer.gif] FISHING: Fair

Red Side Trout:

There was a definite improvement fishing for Trout this past week, we’re seeing the start of those fall hatches which include Mahogany Duns, Fall Caddis, and large numbers of Midge.

The mornings have been slow with a few midges and spinner falls. It picks up about midday with some emerger style patterns, and Mahogany cripples fished in the film.

Check the back eddies for Midges and BWOs, and use 6X tippets for a better chance.

The Fall Caddis start getting active late in the day so plan on fishing a large orange soft hackle down deep with extra weight to keep it deep.

Summer Steelhead:

This past week was by far the best results for summer steelhead we’ve seen all season, which is good news, but it’s still spotty at best.

Usually by now the steelhead fishing on the Deschutes is to the point where the average guy can go out and get a steelhead or two in a day’s effort. That’s simply not the case this year. My log book shows that the amount of steelhead going over the fish count trap at Sherars Falls is usually around 50 to 150 a day after the 10th of September, and those are conservative numbers.

If you look at the numbers today of the fish going over The Dalles Dam, (6,837 Steelhead) and the fish going over the John Day Dam, (6,686 Steelhead) it’s plain to see that the difference is only about 150 Steelhead between those Dams to come up the Deschutes. This is well below the forty year average that finds their way up stream, and is why the steelhead counts in the Deschutes are down 25%, and yet the numbers in the Columbia are above average by 10%.

It seems like the fish are just going straight to Idaho without stopping. I’ve spoken to two fish bio’s and they said that from time to time this happens, and there is not much we can do about it. So be prepared to spend more time between hook-ups, it’s going to be slow this season for steelhead on the Deschutes.

Again as I promised, I will stay on top of the steelhead results like a hawk, and pray for a positive change and I’ll let you know ASAP!!!
