Lower Deschutes River report by Numb-Butt Outfitters

REDSIDE RAINBOWS

Trout fishing has been good and is improving from good to outstanding with the cooler water temperatures. There's still plenty of midday surface action in the eddies with foam. Trout are taking small caddis and pale evening dun mayflies. Sizes 16 - 20 are producing best. Nymphing proves to be the most productive technique, and will be for the remainder of the year. Pheasant tails, hairs ears, copper johns, and emergant caddis pupas are all hot flies righ now. If you're only fishing one nymph, go with size 18. If you're fishing two use a size 16, then a 20. The most productive nymph is a size 20 or 22 black gun metal midge. Black thread, silver wire rib, and a small tuft of pearl crystal flash sticking back from the head (glass bead). Trail this behind a size 16 hairs ear and you're golden! The only problem is landing fish on these tiny hooks, but I'd wrather have a problem landing fish than hooking them!

STEELHEAD

We just finished two long days chasing steelhead just above and below Maupin. There aren't too many fish around town, but the conditions are perfect. The White River is fine, the Lower River is great, and the water temperatures have dropped with the cool nights (59am64pm). Now all we need is a bunch of steelhead! Not to worry, the dam counts have shot from hundreds to thousands and we should have plenty of steelhead around Maupin in the next two weeks. Right now fish are being caught between Macks Canyon and the Mouth.

Once again, don't wait for the good reports, go out and make them! I predict good steelhead fishing very soon!

Rain is on the way, so the White River may act up mid week...just a heads up.
