goin' to Haymeadow/Cold Springs and catch some Trout
#7
Southernman,

You nailed it. These lakes are mostly for float tubers or boats. The dams can be productive at times, but as you said it's a hike. I used my boat this time and it was nice to be able to cover the lake and find the fish. Also it will be too choked with weeds by early summer to bother with it, so if you fish it do so now. It's been my experience, and that of some of my buddies that EITHER Haymeadow is on or Cold Springs is on. I'm sure there's been times when both are productive, but never when I'm there. If you don't catch fish at one of them in an hour or so, move to the other. Just an observation, take it for what it's worth. I'd strongly suggest a boat or float tube. As the weeds fill in fish pockets.

If I'm confined to the bank, then I'd hit Baker Reservoir outside of St. George. The drive is quicker, and the road is much better compared to that rutted horror show leading to Sunnyside. They stock it with rainbow, though I'd not use powerbait. I'd go with a bubble injected worm floating near the bottom there. Some bigger browns come down outta the Santa Clara river into baker and you want to give yourself every opportunity to catch one.

Also, the ice is off of Echo res. in Spring Valley. It offers much better bank opportunities as well. I sure would like to see that res fill up again. A few years back before I started fly fishing, I'd run smaller rattle traps in early spring and tear up trout and bass alike there.

Later,
Mark
