Last Hurrah at Lindon 7-19-22

LINK TO VIDEO

I wanted to get some video shots for my work-in-progress video on catfish.  I figured I could get what I needed at Lindon…only a short drive (less gas $) from Salt Lake.  But I also figured that the water levels might be getting pretty skinny inside the harbor.  I was right on both counts.

Launched about 6:30 am.  Air temp 72 and water temp 77…warming to 80 by 11 am departure.  Toasty.

There’s a sign at the top of the ramp advising boaters that there is a 2’ drop-off at the end of the ramp.  That is largely because of the “scour hole” created over time by starting and gunning boat motors at launch.

Turned out that the average depth all the way out the harbor was less than 2 feet.  And in some places my heels were dragging in mud as I was being pulled backwards by my electric motor…and the sonar flashing at only about 1 foot of water.  Still some good sized boats docked at Lindon.  Some of them may have trouble getting to the ramp to be taken out.

Finding water deeper than 2 feet required motoring out quite a ways from shore.  Ran at about 2.5 to 3 feet depth all the way down to the Bubbleup.  No water coming in and no white bass hanging around.  The big thunderstorm that blew through the night before might have scattered the fish.  There was also some “murkiness” in the water.  But on the glass calm surface there were cruising carp wherever you looked.  A lot of them cruised up within a few feet of me before boiling and boogying.  I got one picture of some approaching while battling a catfish.

I did catch one lonely white bass while casting randomly…well away from the Bubbleup.  And had a couple more hits on the small jigs, but no more hookups.  That whitie volunteered for bait duty and did produce one catfish.

All in all, I did catch about a half dozen cats…ranging from about 24” to the largest at a measured 27”.  No contest fish were harmed in the making of this report.  And I got the video I wanted of rigging and fishing bling beads and buzz fligs…my newest experimental line of fligology.  All but the one on white bass meat were caught on chubs.  And all fish hit in between 2.5 to 3 feet of water.  Went a long ways out to find 4’of water…but no fish.

Saw a couple of boats in the distant south that probably came out of Provo Harbor.  But there were no other anglers…boat or bank tanglers…at Lindon during my visit.  The combination of low water and high heat is probably to blame.  It was getting pretty hot by mid-morning…and the fishing went cold after about 9:30…so I wrapped it up early.  Not likely to be back at Lindon until Mama Nature refills the lake.
