I personally know several hundred people that fish and I have never heard of anybody that stopped fishing because one body of water had a decline in fish or stopped producing fish altogether. I'm sure it's a possibility, but I also firmly believe it's not probable. But as you say, it would be hard to verify one way or the other due to a paucity of data.
