Goat Packers / Tips
#28
My goats were about 5 months old and I took them to a high mountain lake to fish. The truck had a home made stock rack with solid sides. and there was a tool box in front of it. Well I had a cooler and I took the cooler and put it under the tool box. We went to the lake and no trouble. We spent the night and the next day we hiked out. Some people walked in that day and walked out with us. They seemed a little put off and I figured it was the goats. Well we got to the truck and there was garbage everywhere. I started saying what the heii is going on! They said you didn't leave it like that? I said heck no. We got closer and there was bear tracks on the roof, the hood and they broke off both rear view mirrors. My bug guard was smashed down and they slid down the window several times. They got the cooler and took everything. The ate all the goat poop in the back of the truck. They put their claws into the gap in the door and sprung the door.
I Saw bears about every time we camped in the back country. I never got a chance to shoot one but it was un-nerving at times.
One time I had the goats in camp and we went out bow hunting that night. As we were coming back to camp I see something coming fast and it was black. I didn't have much time to prepare for an attack. I got ready to swing my bow and then I realized it was Elvis my black goat. He had somehow got loose and came looking for me. One time I was walking into a place deer hunting. We sat down and were resting when my Alpine Clint started to bang his head on a tree. This was the first week of November. All of a sudden a spike bull comes out to see what is going on. I shot him with my 243 at about 30 yards. We did that several times killing smaller bulls. The biggest bull I shot with them was a small 6 point. They packed out several elk.
Your kids are plenty big enough and old enough to start taking on light loads. I had one Saddle that I used and let one pack in water and the other would pack out water. if they got tired I would pour out the water.
Back then I would eat tootsie rolls. I would give them the wrappers as a treat. They loved them.
