Got an update from the Forest Service last week at the Evanston Ranger District Office. Wife and I left on a Sunday night for a week long trip to Whitney. We noticed going up Whitney road that almost every camp had a trailer or tent in it with nobody around. We noticed each day as we were fourwheeling that nobody inhabited those camps. Then Friday night they came in masses. Upon inquiry at the Ranger District we were told that leaving tents and trailers unattended to save public property was a violation and if we would notify the Bear River Ranger Station of the area and description of trailers or tents that Citations would be issued. Lets all just remember that public lands belong to all of us and if we need a reserved spot there are lots for sale in Manor Lands or reserved campgrounds.

Amen, I noticed the same thing at near Soapstone, We drove all around the canyon trying to find a spot, lucky we found one up near Trial lake. The camp site next to us had a camp trailer there but no people around... Come Friday evening what do you know

I guess you could but its one of those things were we just weren't sure till Friday. We got there Wednesday afternoon thinking its work week there should be plenty of spots.... Not ....Come Thursday we spent the day hiking and fishing thought it was strange not seeing them but maybe we just missed them and went about our business.
Friday morning my GF had mentioned the camper was leaking water and it was flowing toward our camp so I knocked on there trailer no answer.

There are some sites you can buy a season pass to. I don't think they follow the abandonment rule. But they are a pay site. Freebies is just ignorant. I know we always hit a little lake up north, even on Holidays and got a great spot. Not anymore. People take their trailers up weeks in advance. Don't know if Idaho has then occupied law, but they should. Keeps it fair.

It should be the same in Idaho if its National forest. The Ranger in Evanston said it was a Forest Service Policy. I can't believe some of the rigs people leave up there. They are worth more than my house.

If the unattended campers are "squatting" on Forest Service land, then perhaps the owners would not mind if some "squatted" in their camper during the weekdays when they weren't around?? Seems logical to me. I see a bunch of these up in the Logan Canyon area and can't believe people would leave their nice campers, 4 wheelers, gear, etc. unattended all week, but they do. They are sure more "trusting" than I would be. These are the same people who whine when their "stuff" gets heisted. Leaving thousands of dollars worth of gear in the mountains for days on end, with very little security, is just plain stupid in my book. But then again I have to work hard in order to earn what "toys" I do have.
