Went up to Settlement from 4:30pm-6:30pm today. Caught a very small bow and a few chubs. It is mostly frozen still and I fished the 100 yards or so of open water at the stream inlet. Ice is looking thin and should all be open soon. The kids across from me caught a 12" bow other than that it was pretty dead. I was hoping to land one of those Tigers...

Glad to hear you caught something!
In my opinion Settlement is most likely one fo the poorest fisheries in the state right now. I'm not sure if its management or something in the water, but I hope it shapes up for my kids time to fish. I used to fish it when i was really young and remember catching fish, not alot but I rememebr them being there anyway! And for how much they DWR says they stock it I beleieve it should be producing some fish, and bigger ones at that.
Every angler I've talked to when I've either been up there or found out someone has fished it has about the same report as you gave today.

I agree Ratstar... I've always thought I just didn't know how to fish it. I have fished it 30 hours +/- since I moved out here to Tooele County and have maybe caught 8 fish total and only one was a keeper. I keep going back because I want to figure it out. Maybe there is nothing to figure out and I am wasting my time. If the latter is true, it is a shame because I love the setting and the convienience.

I love that too. I can have my line in the water in five minutes from my front door. But what good does it do if all I get is frustrated? lol
I really have fished this many more hours that I care to admit to anyone cause I thought I could figure it out too. I have figured a few things on it but not enough to make it a worthwhile stop for fishing.

The kids that were fishing across from me said they caught a brown two days ago up there. I thought they only had bows and tigers.
Ratstar... you check this forum almost as much as me. My wife gives me grief and says Im obsessed and I can't disagree...lol

I've never heard of any browns up there.
Yeah I am trying to stay on top of a few things with our Esox Club and my email keeps going off saying someone replied to me. But I am on here pretty much whenever I'm not fishing. Heck I'm "working" right now!

I have been fishing on settlement all my life. The fishing is definately not what it used to be. I havent had a "good" fishing day up there in years. Now when I go , I have a 2 year old daughter that goes with me , I set one pole up for trout and one for chub. Might as well catch something. And get rid of some of the chubs. I usually catch alot of chub and a trout or 2 if I am lucky.

Welcome to the site fishing girl. I'm glad to see that your taking your daughter up fishing, I want to start taking mine but wasnt sure if she'd hang out with dad for very long. She's a little bit younger than yours at a year and half. But maybe I'll give it a try soon.

It's not what it used to be for sure, but it still beats the urban fisheries here in the Salt Lake valley. We've done OK to pretty good in the past. I really enjoy it in the evenings when the sun starts setting and the fish start rising. When I see the swallows taking bugs off the water I know it's time to fish it with a fly. Problem is that many evenings that canyon wind comes up and makes it hard to see the rises or it even puts the fish down.
During daylight hours I like to use a small blue fox spinner, size 0 to size 1. Gold seems to get the most action, but silver does OK. I think in the past three years we have caught a total of one trout on Powerbait with another couple on a night crawler. The chubs love the crawlers, no problem keeping the kids happy with those. It's also fun for the kids to catch the crawdads, one more thing to keep them interested.
I do think that there is a lot more pressure than there was 10 years ago. Even in the middle of the week there is usually a pretty good crowd. I also notice a lot more garbage up there. Still, I like the setting and it's close enough to home that I can be there with the kids in about 30 minutes.

No not too much longer. But it seems like forever somedays. lol . Heading out to Grantsville tomorrow if the stupid wind dies down long enough to go. I have my fingers crossed!
I gave up using lures at settlement. Too rocky and nothing really ever seems interested. Or people Decide to fish so close to you that you cant barely cast without crossing lines.

Hey FishingGirl,
Have you heard anything about Vernon
lately? That is my favorite place to fish. When they drained it, were all the fish killed? Last time I was there just before it was drained, my wife caught a 14 in brown on a 1/4 kastmaster, andd I managed a 17 in brown off the toon with a black wollybugger. We go there quite often and just love it. If you find out anything bout this please let me know. I've talked to the fish and game bit keep getting the I dont know.

Does Grantsville have any open water yet? My brother is visiting this weekend from out of state and wanted to take him fishing. I seem to have the best luck out there. I need to try Vernon this year... will it be fishable?

Some of the browns ran up stream when they drained Vernon, and I believe its fishable again. Havent been yet this year, but plan a trip very soon.

Grantsville is open. My brother took a trip last week and checked it out. Thats why we were going fishing today. But the wind messed up that plan. Stupid wind.....
I have no idea on how good the fishing is yet, But its open!
I havent heard much about Vernon yet this year. Just that it will be restocked soon. I havent been out there just yet and none of my friends have yet either. I would imagine a few fish survived the draining. Its one of those things you might have to make the trip to find out. Sorry I didnt have any more info. If i hear anything I will post it. :]
