Winder
#1
Just wondering if anybody here knows if anything survived in Winder, and if there are any plans to put more fish in it. I really liked it the one time I tried it, and shortly after they killed it. It was also Sad to lose a place where I can take my float tube and not worry about getting run over by water skiers.

the only news i heard about winder this year is that they are trying to make it a fee area, like they did with twin falls it is owned by the same canal company from what i hear.

I loved Winder. Flyfishing for bass and bluegill was awesome.

I am also interested in any information BFT'ers come up with on what is happening at Winder in preparation for fishing. One of my favorite holes of the past.

I heard that too. I hope it doesn't happen, I hate those fish murdering jerks. They had to go and drain the two lakes (besides weston) where I could float tube in peace. I wish the state would step in and just restock it and manage it like they did before. I'll even help with catching bass and bluegill to move over there Smile

And you can Thank your friendly Twins Lakes Canal Company for that. The state can't step in. Personally I would like to see the state walk away from all their waters, and then deny them a permit to stock it themselves. They don't make a stand because they want to keep waters open for the angler- it's just time to bite the bullet though.

the reason they keep draining it is because they are trying to get that damn in at the mouth of the narrows, and if they already have water they realy dont stand a chance in getting it, so they are draining the resivores in order to show that they need that extra water.

Yeah, they're evil buggers. It figures, as soon as I move up to this area they start ruining all my favorite lakes, and they want to ruin there narrows, and from the sound of it, I'm really going to like that place.

"Twin Lakes Canal Comp". Owns the Twin Lakes, Condie. Weston, Winder Res.

IDAHO FISH AND GAME was going to pull out of those RES. of maintaining and stocking them but came to a agreement with the Twin Lakes Canel Comp. to maintain and stock them for trades of the IDAHO FISH AND GAME to help pass this "BILL" to build a dam at the mouth of the "ONEIDA NARROWS". Why??? i could not tell you..... I think that was a HUGE mistake on the IDF&G part.

That's disappointing to hear. I love those lakes, but we don't have a lot of trout streams in the area. I'd hate lose the Narrows.

Speaking of the Narrows project, what are you guys' opinions on the proposed dam? Over the years the river fishing through there has slowly gone down hill, now the vegitation has gotten so thick it makes it very tough to fish. A person used to be able to drift a worm, strip a streamer, or jerk a rapala and catch some awesome fish. Not anymore, what caused the over growth? Anyway, I'm torn between a new lake fishery or allowing the river to just get worse and worse. Though I would definetly vote for a project to decrease that vegitation so I can take my wife up there and show her what it was like when it was enjoyable to fish there. Let's hear you thoughts!

the fish are still there at the narrows utah power now has a constant flow meaning that they dont go from a very low water lvl to a very high water lvl in a short period of time, which allows moss, trees, crass and brush to help clarify the water. In the spring last year the water was low before the moss growth came, we would go up there and average 2 lb trout, and caught a few over 4 lb. This wouldnt be possible without the moss thats up there. My family has land down around the utah idaho boarder and it has been as clear as i can ever remember, we have actualy caught trout down there, when 5 years ago you couldnt catch anything in that chocolete milk.

From what i have heard about a new lake up there is it wont be big enough to handle a good fishery, and that it will warm the waters below enough that trout will not survive well. Also if they build this damn there will only be a few hundred yards of public fishing so you wont have to worry about being able to fish, the land owners below wont let ppl get access now. The winter range that this will take over for the deer will also have an effect, it may not seem like there would be a huge impact to these animals but it would disturb there route from strawberry to there winter range threw that area, it may not effect them much but if it does the deer are already hurting enough in that area.

I grew up in the "west side" which is were the water rights will be going and yes it would help the farmers out alot, but i dont agree with ruining something so pretty and great for everyone to help some 5 or 10 percent of the ppl in the valley. After all they knew there was no water when they moved there.
The info i posted is mainly an opinion some of which i know for sure so dont hold me by it. So if i posted something wrong dont jump all over me.

Interesting, you brought up a few things that never even crossed my mind. About the deer and private ground. And also about warming up the river below. Good points, you've swayed me to think the new dam IS a bad idea. The water clarity is better, it's just miserable picking up a 5lb gob of moss with every cast. I guess you can't have everything, big fish or easy fishing?

i have noticed a come back in the browns up there also, idahod f&g doesnt plant them in there anymore but they are beging to spawn in decent numbers, also i know of 3 ppl to catch cutts up the narrows. I hadnt heard of a cutt being caught up there in 10 years or more. As for the moss wish i knew a way to help the only thinkg i can tell you is do what i do and fish it early after it gets to mossie either try right behind the damn or in the lake.
