ice auger
#1
I would appreciate some input on a good hand ice auger. I took the boys to a near by pond that is stock with trout in the winter. It was froze over but lucky for us someone had drilled some holes. We caught some trout and the boys had a blast. Next time we might not be so lucky so i'm thinking about a ice auger. I dont want order one and end up with a junk one but i also really dont want an expensive one. because I don't know how often i will need it or use it just depends on the weather.

I would recommend a hand auger. A really reliable and good built auger is Mora. I suggest 5 or 7 inch diameter. It is really easy to use plus no gasoline, no battery, no hassle.

You can find good deals on Mora augers on ebay.

Strike Master Augers....

I had one of the Mora models for many years.
It is the the least costly but not in my opinion the best buy for your money.

as long as you are only cutting a couple holes and not ging though much more than a foot of ice you can get away with this modle.

Two years ago I upgraded to the Lazer model, Cuts holes 2-3 times faster with less than half the effort of the mora.

well worth the upgrade. I mean worth every penny. nothing worse than working up a sweat on a 20* day and sitting out on the open ice soaking wet. Once you get cold fishing is no longer any fun any more.

Now if your going to cut a lot of holes wich many of the perch anglers do, you will want something with a little power to it.
The price dose jump dramaticly from here on up, and dose mean increasing your hauling efforts to get out to your fishing location.

I was window shopping the other day, stopped to look at this model. I was impressed and some what concerned.

It comes with a 12 volt battery about the same size as the battery of a Vexlar, that fits under the top of the housing that wires in to the motor. It also come with three extention charging cables. One caple will hook directly to your truck or car, the other will plug in to your ATV and the third plugs in to a wall socket for charging.

I opened the manual to see the maintanance involved with this unit to see what if any. I found the battery needs to be recharged every couple months to protect the integrity of its chargeability.

I am strongly concidering this unit, I like the idea of no smoke or fuel contamination when ice fishing. I may be to late to pick one up this year, the store had its last unit on the floor and it was the display model.

My concern was not so much the motor, as it looked well protected from the environment in its heavy duty plastic housing, it was more the battery, the thought I was having with it was in five years will I be able to pick up another battery for it. Like my portable hand drill, the new replacement battery cost more than a new battery and drill unit combined...

The after thought I am having is that since I dont rarely go out on the ice with out the quad, throwing a car battery in one of the crates is not totaly out of the question, especialy if I want to cut 50 holes in a day.

now would be a good time, I went to gander mountain this week and looked at all these modles, as with me price was an issue, I seriously concidered the electric one,

I am was pretty sure that the rechargable battery that it comes with would be offset by the not having to buy gas and oil over the next couple years.

now normaly I only drill only a couple holes when I go out, but I thought to my self what about those days when I donate my time doing kids fishing derbies.

realy wanting the electric one for personal needs was a bit of a conflict for my actual needs.

I ended up perchasing the 2000 mag, at $100.oo less than the regular sticker price. with stores in need of sales they seem to be reducing prices to move remaining stock prior to year end inventory and tax liability for merchandise on hand..

It came with a cd on how to operate, and one fishing tip.

I havent used it yet, but I figure I will in the next couple days when the alberta siamiese twin clipper hits in the middle of next week.

today we are going to get a foot of snow. we have half of it on the ground already

For hand augers, it's a hard to beat a strikemaster lazer. I have the 6 &8" models. for a power auger I have a strikemster lazer mag. I'm selling that to a buddy and upgrading to the 4 stroke strikelite. it runs off straight gas so no more mixing fuel [Smile] Try to hook up with some other ice anglers since most are more than happy to let you try out their augers. Now is a good time to buy one as they will be discounted to make space for the spring gear

Nils beats the hell out of any Mora. They cost a bit more, but are definitely the fastest augers in the industry.
Once you get a Nils, nothing comes close. [Wink]

I got mine for I think about $90 from Cabela's a couple years ago... It's kinda hard to find them stand-alone. Usually if you buy one of their power augers they give you the hand setup along with it...

just did a google search for "nils master auger" got a lot of hits. However only found 1 site that says they have any in stock. Unless you want a gas powered one. The 8" is $120-130. The listed price for the 6" is $100 + s&h, however the 6" was out on all sites just now.
