Short Shaft vs Long Shaft for a trolling motor question

I have a 14' fiberglass fishing boat (Livinston Tri-Hull). I have been using a 1967 9.9 hp Johnson short shaft trolling motor. That motor runs beautiful. Starts on the 2nd pull every time. Never had a minute of trouble with it.

Recently I had a friend that bought a new boat and motor. He then gave me his old motor, a 1983 Johnson Seahorse 9.9 hp long shaft trolling motor. (16 years newer than my motor.)

I am a novice when it comes to boats and motors.

Other then the length, is there any difference in a short shaft vs a long shaft?

Would the long shaft work on my boat?

Any thoughts here on switching to the newer motor?

[#008000]If you are just going to troll with it, you should not have any issues. Except that it will stick down in the water further and you will not be able to navigate your boat in as shallow of water with it.[/#008000]

[#008000]However, That would not be the case if your boat were configured for a long shaft motor and you were thinking of trying to use a short shaft motor on it. The transom that is compatible with a long shaft motor will not work with a short shaft motor (assuming a direct transom mount) - it would make the propeller too far out of the water and the prop would not make proper contact with the water and the cooling water intake could be exposed out in the air preventing proper cooling for the engine.[/#008000]
