Department of Natural Resources officials today announced more than 50 state parks, recreation areas and boating locations across the state have special events and activities planned this Saturday and Sunday for Michigan's Free Fishing Weekend. For these two days, residents and nonresidents can fish without purchasing a fishing license, though all other fishing regulations still apply.
Most events are scheduled for Saturday, with children's fishing clinics, contests and other fishing-related activities being held at Bay City, Cheboygan, Duck Lake, Hartwick Pines, Indian Lake, Island Lake, Lake Gogebic, Maybury, Metamora-Hadley, Mitchell, Newaygo, Onaway, Orchard Beach, Ortonville, Porcupine Mountains, Proud Lake, Van Riper and Young, and at Bolles, Port Austin and Tri-Centennial harbors.
Baraga State Park is participating in the Baraga County Lake Trout Festival taking place at the waterfront park in L'Anse. The weekend includes a fishing pond for kids and a fishing contest on Keweenaw Bay along with cooking contests, kids' games, food and music. On Saturday, Fayette Historic State Park has planned a full day of 1860-era games and Tahquamenon Falls State Park is hosting a "Hike Between Da Falls."
Tawas Point State Park is the site of the annual "Tawas Point Celebration Days." This two-day event includes lighthouse tours, traditional craft demonstrations, children's activities, a fishing derby and much more.
Sand castle building contests will be held at Traverse City and Muskegon state parks, and a beach volleyball tournament is planned at Van Buren State Park. Traverse City also is hosting a morning bike ride.
Waterloo Recreation Area is sponsoring a "mentoring day" to help youngsters get started in fishing, hiking and archery, and Ionia State Recreation Area is planning a child's health, safety and wellness festival.
For more information, contact the individual state park, recreation area or state harbor, or access the [url "http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_41665-156969--,00.html"][#000000]"GO-Get Outdoors" calendar of events[/#000000][/url] online at www.michigan.gov/dnr under "Recreation and Camping."
All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.

I am a regular paying customer, but I still can be found near the water on both days, so if any one can find me they will be in for a treat...

sorry no clues....[Wink] those who know me already know where to look.[Wink]

good luck and get on the water, and by all means take a kid fishing.[shocked]
