Cisco not Yet
#1
Had several folks ask me about the Cisco run..  so since I didn’t know I asked Mike for his thoughts. Sounds like nothing showing up yet on the rock pile and that’s usually a week or so ahead of any running to the beaches. Sounds like they will be late this year so maybe two weeks before it’s on. But we’ll keep watching and give ya a heads up if they start to show up. I expect there’s no chance of ice this year so waders or float over top and snag a few. Later J

I didn’t ask, but typically it does fall on that weekend. Hopefully Mike will clarify that date for us.

There will be no "cisco disco" this year. I could never find anyone interested in taking over for me to catch cisco, obtain fries, make 80lbs of scone dough, etc. It was a lot of work for sure and it was a blast! We had a good run of nearly 40 years of which I was the ring-leader for 31 of those years! However, it was more than just myself.....I had a great "Disco" team helping with gathering cisco, cleaning fish, and cooking for many hours in some crazy winter conditions. The Garden City Chamber of Commerce (along with many others) are still having the Bear Lake Monster Winterfest on January 24th and 25th at the Utah State Park Marina. www.bearlakemonsterwinterfest.com
That link should have all the info that you need. There will still be a polar plunge, still have a cardboard boat race, still lots of prizes, food, things to buy, and even a largest cisco contest from what I can see on-line. All good things have to come to an end. I'll miss all the friends I've made over the years and remember the good times we had with Doug Miller, Adam Eakle, Karen Miller, Reese Stein, Gary Winterton, Brian Brinkerhoff, etc. If anyone wants to try to re-ignite the Cisco Disco in the future, let me know. I can give you some very helpful info.

I completely understand. I attended a number of times and it was so much fun. Thanks for everything you and the team put into it. I can't imagine how much work it was.

Thanks Scott, I didn't realize you were the organizer of that event... I knew the division had a lot to do with it, but didn't know it was you... Great service over the years, i've had many of my nieces and nephews that fondly remember those scones and hot chocolate... One of their favorite parts of the cisco chase... I think the wrong part of those events continued... That circus at the marina is a pain in the back side if you try to take a boat to snag some cisco... they need to get their winter fest off the cisco weekend... at least keep from closing down the marina like they have done the last few years... Thanks Scott we really appreciate what you've done it was a great tradition, but fully understand everything has their season...Thank you... Jeff

I just want to clear things up:  the UDWR had ZERO to do with the Cisco Disco, ever!  It was my friends and myself.  I just happened to work for UDWR, but on the day of Cisco Disco I was officially off work, used my own money and never the state, drove my personal vehicle, used my personal cookers, pots, pans, napkins, recipes, ingredients, and even collected fish on my own time and had friends collect fish to help out.  The only thing UDWR did was an occasional TV or media interview and they would donate some fish after they used them for biological infomation.  That was it.   There was some talk this week of another group that may try to put on a Cisco Disco-type breakfast, but I haven't heard anything concrete.

Well you did a lot of good PR for the division over the years because we always thought that was cool that the division was doing that, sorry been giving credit to the wrong spot all of these years... Might have been that some of my early years a the Disco we were friends with Verl Hanchett and I guess he was introducing you guys from the division, so maybe that's where my misunderstanding began... Anyway I bet it will be nice to not have the headache of setting up that big of a deal... I'm sure the catching fish for it was a lot more fun, than preparing them all for the cookers... Although when the fish weren't running yet, I'll be it was stressful... Thanks again for that service it was always a fun part of the trip.. Although the cisco run was always more fun on the ice years, rather than the wader years... Guess that is what has slowed us down on attending lately, I prefer a boat to waders, so we've been snagging cisco the last few years rather than braving the waves... Later Jeff

I wasn't looking for any credit, but I just wanted to make sure that it was never construed that I was doing this on the UDWR time and budget. I'm just glad I got to do some of the fun things with the TV folks....like jumpin in the lake, and leading the Cisco Disco crazies in the dance! LOL.
I will miss doing the breakfast since I made some great friends over the years, but I have some other things that are more important this year that I need to take care of. I would be willing to help out in the future, but gathering all the stuff, food, and making scones will not be missed! It was a bit stressful when the lake was 1/2 frozen and it was difficult, if not impossible to get out in a boat, but the fish were not running along the shore. This could be just one of those years. I'm hoping the fish come in along the shoreline. I'll try to be up there one morning this week to hopefully use my "influence" to "will" the fish into the shoreline! LOL If I could have done that, I would have retired years ago! LOL

Got cha, need to make sure the boss knows it was a private thing not done on work time... Understand and good luck bringing the fish in... It's not even close to ice this year is it? Seems like as crazy as the season has been everywhere else I don't think Bear Lake has a chance to freeze unless things are a lot different on that side of the mountain... Would be great if it did freeze, but I'd have to change my three week plans for ice.. What a short season this is going to be this year... Later Jeff
