Willard Report 06/12/04 (can you say hot?)
#1
Caught 14 wipers this afternoon between 4:30 and 9pm. The smallest was 16" the largest was 21 inches, most were 18". We caught them on several different lures, standard and white producers and rattling rapalas. These fish sure are small after fishing in Nebraska. Here is a picture of the 21 inch wiper. WH2

HA69 and I went to willard from 5:30-9:30 and we only boated 4 and had another break off. The biggest was 21" and another one was 20". I guess you found the hot spot. Surface temperature was 68-72 degrees.

We also had one break off, tore the swivel up, the way the side planner took off, I was thinking state record. I was checking out my new fish finder today and it was reading 72* at least until the sun started going down. WH2

Mine was reading 72 degrees on the northern portion of the bay but towards the midde of the bay I came across some water that was 68 then I made my way back to the north side and it went back up to 72.

We stayed in one area all evening, same area that we caught them two weeks ago. I think the evening is the best time to fish at least for now, when the water temp gets a little higher that will change.

I haven't had a line brake in a couple of years since I started doing two things: I always check my line after ever fish to make sure there are no abrasions that might brake in the heat of battle, Second I leave my drag semi-loose, enough that the fish can pull out line but tight enough that they can't run too far. The big wipers we caught last week in Nebraska were the same way, give them their head but make them work for it. After loosing that big wiper yesterday to a bad swivel, I wonder if they make stainless steel swivels? One thing I forgot to mention yesterday, we saw some surface activity for the first time, it wasn't much but one wiper even came up in the prop wash right behind the boat. I'm still learning how to use my new fish finder but I was marking a lot of fish, maybe shad, a few feet under the surface. WH2

Looks like if you can find the fish and stay in the area, you can have great nights like that.

I always use snap clips when fishing for wipers,I dont really worry about line twist because I'm not using spinners or anything that can twist my line up.

good job on bustin the wipers guys,But that doesn't look like you in the pic curtis,LOL.Nice fish Polokid.

Your right Tony, thats not me, I took my son out and his friend. The friend caught the wiper in the picture, it was his first time wiper fishing, now he is hooked.
Were can I buy some of those snaps locally? I know Kent ordered some online but I was hoping to get some around here. WH2

Welcome back and congrats on the trip.

I've been using the SPRO Stainless Steel ball bearing swivels. They are pricey (about a buck each), but since the 100lb. swivel is the size of most 15-20lb. swivels, they are worth their weight in gold to me. I buy the size 4 (30lb. rating) Hyper Snaps and just add it to the back size of the swivel for a quick connect.

You can find all of this at Sportsmans.

Here is a link to the SPRO site and the "Heavy Swivels" are the ones I am talking about. The "Hyper Snap" can be seen on the picture above the heavy swivels.

Here is a list of online stores where you can purchase them also.

LOL means "Laugh Out Loud" LMAO "Laughed My AXX Off"

Strange to think I've been a computer geek for 11 years now, and I just learned that on this board about a year ago. Don't feel dumb. Some of us just haven't spent time in chat rooms or message boards until now.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone, I'll check out sportsmans first and if they don't have what I'm looking for I'll broaden my search.
Chad, I guess I'll have to bring my boat the next time I come over and we can fish in it. I hope you are able to get your motor fixed. WH2
