Rockport Fishing and Camping
#1
Cookie said it is camping time, so we dusted off the RV and headed out on the long road to Rockport. 15 minutes later we started setting up Smile

It was cold. Really cold the first night. Old trailer heater hardly got a rest. First time I have been worried about the water lines and this RV has a heated underbelly. But all faired well.

Lets jump to the report

Started very cold and very slow on the lake. Only a few rainbows the first couple day fishing near the Crandall Canyon inlet. Meps, Superduper's and Jakes as well as a  bit of powerbait got some lovn. But over all slow fishing start.

Last day, Cookie tied on the world-famous Tube Dude Marabou jigs and went to work on some really nice bows up near the inlet. She was one happy camper and even suggested she might switch the jigs into top pace on her list over her beloved Jake's lure. That is high praise from Cookie - txs Pat. Black with silver tinsel and a painted eyes did the heavy lifting. Green also got some attention.

Oh, ya. I caught a few too, thanks for asking.

Good first run to the season. Where next: Snake up in Idaho for early Cats, or been thinking about a run to CJ Strike or maybe.... I dont know. Spring break is coming up so I better get a plan together or she will have me in the yard.

Here is the video link - cheers

Another great video and report Lance, thanks for sharing it with us. Love that drone footage as well. Looks like the lake is lower this year, compared to last year. Weren't people ice fishing there just a few weeks past?

Ya the ice went really fast all around us.

RP is a bit low but Echo is nearly at the high water mark. So I expect that RP will start filling now.

I forgot to mention that I had fished Echo earlier in the week with the student anglers. It was slow that day but picked up the day after. Kids caught a couple bass and trout playing with some senko worms. I also had some good East Canyon reports from a couple other students. Short on details but they had the photos to back up the stories.

Had a request for info on the 'bou jigs.  I don't make or sell them anymore.  But anyone who is at least a semi competent fly tyer can make jigs that work.  I believe that the reason my jigs work as well as they do is because I tie them "bugger style"...using a palmer wrapped hackle feather around the body to give it more profile and action.

I am attaching a couple of writeups to show some of the color options and to suggest ways of rigging and fishing them.

Did you have a mold and make your own heads or buy them ready made. I'd like to make some myself, but the local tackle shops only carry a few different colors.

You have named the main reason that a lot of us prefer to make our own stuff.  It's not so much about catching fish on something you make yourself...as it is about being able to fish exactly the size shape and colors you want for any given water...for any species...on any given day...and under the prevailing conditions.  Fish Tech has a lot of the stuff.  But you might want to start out by just buying a few unpainted jig heads and some basic paints.  I use mostly 1/8 oz.  but use 1/4 oz. for bigger fish or in deeper water.  And often a lighter 1/16 oz. is best.

Howsomever, unless you fish a LOT...using only the lures you make...it can require a pretty good investment in equipment and components to get started.  I am attaching a PDF file on making your own jigs.  And I have a YouTube video on it too if you wanna see it visually.
