Strawberry 4/14/23
#1
Finally made my first trip to Strawberry for the season.  19 Degrees when I arrived, 33 degrees when I left.  Walking on was easy, coming off at 1:15 was more of a challenge, especially going up cardiac hill.  Sinking to mid thigh, had to crawl up on hands and knees.  Big Thanks to a guy with the wind skiing apparatus for taking my sled up for me!  My fishing hole is 1 mile from the parking lot, so the gentleman saved me a lot of work!  Caught my first fish in 54 seconds!  Only one rainbow for the day, healthy 17.5".  Rest were mainly small cuts.  25 for the day.  Things were great early, then slowed down about 9:30.  Picked up again at 12:15, caught about 10 in 30 min.  A bit windy, but a great day!  I have never ice fished this late in the season before.  Buried my hand auger drilling holes.  Have no clue how much clear ice there was, if any.  Next to impossible trying to clear the slush out of my hole.

Wow, a mile out there, that must have been a hike coming back in. Glad you were able to get out there and do well. What is this wind skiing apparatus you were talking about, is it like the ones they use on the ski slopes? Was this guy out there fishing or just wind surfing?

I do not know what it is called. Guys are using skis or snowboards, they are attached to a paraglide like apparatus, the wind pulls them along, even up in the air at times. Looks pretty fun. The guy was a wind surfer. I was regretting leaving my snow shoes in my sled, I sure could have used them when climbing "cardiac hill"! One of the things I like about ice fishing, I don't need a boat, and I can go as far as I am willing to walk!

Here's a pic of a wind skier I took at Pineview one year.  With a good breeze those guys can rocket down the lake.  And some of them are pretty good at lifting off into the air and landing without killing themselves.

So it's the same technique they use on the water, they just use different skies. Got ya. On the water, if things go bad they land in the water but on the ice, it would be a different outcome.
