Hello All,
I drove along the Eel River on my way to Trinity County (101 Frwy) to a boar hunt, although I really didn't have the time to stop and fish, the areas I saw looked as if they would be some great fishing spots. Has anyone fished the eel river, and if so are there some good spots along the 101? What is being caught out of the river?

[laugh] How about a good laugh?
http://www.bigfishtackle.com/comics.htm

Mike H

You drive all the way up here, right by the blasted house and you don't even honk and wave!!!!
Sheesh!
At the right time of the year they catch a lot of salmon out of the Eel, now the only thing that's legal is steelhead, the ocean season is due to open soon and there will be fish in the bay so you could catch salmon there

Hello Jan,
Didn't realize I'd be in your stomping grounds, I must say that's some beautiful country.

I plan on getting back before the end of the boar season to get my "tusker", I'll be sure to let you know, perhaps we could slay some steelhead or hit the Bay!

Also thinking about heading up to Eureka this year for a B zone deer hunt so I can get a bear also. I heard the bear are thick in Eureka (the policeman who pulled me over doing 95 on the 101 freeway was kind enough to tell me that), by the way officer if you did make it to the site, THANKS AGAIN FOR CUTTING ME SLACK! Seems it was my good fortune to get pulled over by an officer who fished, he said he would be checking the site out (my trucks registered to bigfishtackle.com).

Thanks for the info Jan, and I'll look forward to seeing if we can get some fishing in on my return.

[laugh] How about a good laugh?
http://www.bigfishtackle.com/comics.htm

Mike H

Mike, I've had a rough time figuring out the salmon regs here, even the F&G guys hate them. I've stuck with the saltwater fishing here most of the time, we get a season here that should be announced soon as to when it starts.
There was speculation on the local raido that the limit would be 2 per day with no more than 6 fish in a 7 day period and it will be a split season again.

When I'm lucky enough to get away from work and put my little tin boat in the bay I target halibut and lings, if there's a great bite on for kings I might fling a bait over the side and mooch as they call it.
The problem is when the bite is good there's a lot of people who also want to get in on the action and you end up with Humboldt Bays version of LA rush hour on the water.

That's when the halibut fishing in the north bay really looks good to me.

I didn't take pics of the halibut, but they were all what you'd call "eating size" at 8-10 lbs... size limit here on the California 'butts is 22" and the pacific @ 32" and most I caught were in the 24 - 30 inch range.

I did however take a pic of the one and only salmon for last year

http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshot.html?id=13469

But I find that trolling for these guys is a bore, I'd rather toss lures at them any day, I'm going to introduce them to Fishtraps this year. lol

Edited by Jan on 04/07/02 08:06 AM.
