Picudo Sport Fishing Report Oct 9 to Oct 17 2016!
Tourney Time in Cabo!
We are full speed into tournament season with the Bisbee offshore concluding today. It looks like Wild Hooker took top fish with a 450 lb. Black Marlin. The fish was brought in today and as scales closed Wild Hooker sits on the top. Ill post full results as soon as they are posted as well as cash payouts. As we all know the biggest fish isnt always the biggest check! It was a great overall tournament as many Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin were caught. The conditions were fantastic and the weather was perfect! A good time was had by all and the atmosphere in the marina was excellent with everyone having a great time and the cerveza flowing! The big one is coming up in a few days, the Black and Blue so get ready! There’s going to be some huge money for somebody!
The marlin bite is scattered with fish being picked up in many areas. There isn’t one given hot spot but most fish are being picked up outside on the 1000 fathom curve and in the honey hole off Cerros del Golden 2-5 miles out. That bite is still hot and shows no signs of slowing. As the boats scattered hither and yon for the tournament it’s hard to get good info as everyone is real tight lipped about their fishing. That’s normal for tournament time, everybody got their secrets and won’t divulge anything. Although I enjoy the tournaments it’s strange to see everyone convert into other people completely. Not all, but most, I guess that happens to people when big money and egos are on the line.
There sure has been a good bite on the YFTs! Some nice ones have been weighed and the bigger ones are close to the 300 lb. range. The Golden Gate Bank has started producing and the boys are getting them with live bait kite, downrigger, and on the soak! Skipjack is the choice bait but their getting them with caballitos, and sewed baits also. The porpoise schools outside are also holding and the San Jaime Bank is still giving up a few cows as well! The commercial fleet seems to have stayed out of the San Lucas area as of late, and even though the seiners are checking the area out, they aren’t laying any gear. There must be a good fishing outside somewhere. I hope this holds up. Last year they were in ere thick and slammed our local areas ruining the good fishing for the WON Tuna Jackpot.
Inshore fishing is still producing Dorado and the Wahoo bite has improved immensely! The bite on the Pacific side is still holding and starts right out of the harbor and improves as you head up the coast. The hot spot is still in the Los Arcos to Migriño areas but the fleet is catching them all the way up past Todos Santos. Size is small to 15 lbs. with a few bigger ones being landed. The Wahoo are also mixed in and are mostly blind strikes. The early birds are having much better results on these toothy critters so a dawn patrol is recommended for sure! The Cabeza Ballena to Shipwreck area has also started to produce some nice Whoos and its happening on the chromes, Rapalas, and live bait. Don’t forget your wire leaders as these fish are shredding the mono and leaving a lot of fisherman big time peeved!
With 2 more tourneys to go the marina is in full swing and the town is filled to the hilt. Its an exciting time as our season is kicking off in grand fashion. The weather has started to cool down and the fishing is still red hot! It looks like its going to be a fall to remember. Time to head south, mis amigos, Baja is waiting! Saludos from Cabo!!
