Mobile boat trailer repair?
#1
Hey guys does anyone have any recommendations for a mobile trailer repair guy? I found one on ksl but can't seem to get ahold of him. I was planning on heading down to Powell tomorrow but I'm a little concerned with my trailer brakes. I have a ranger trail with electric surge brakes and I don't think that they are working. Mostly going off what I've read online, I feel it clunk when I stop and when I start going again and there is still a layer of rust on the rotors which I think should have worn off after using the brakes a bit. Anyone have any ideas or recommendations I would appreciate it. The boat and trailer only way about 2000lb fully loaded so I'm not sure I really need brakes since my vehicle seems to do a good job stopping it already.

There are a couple of boat mechanics on the site that can help you but it might be too late if your going tomorrow. Try sending Rich a PM:

Thank you I appreciate it [Smile] I actually looked today and found that either the dealer or person who traded it in removed the brakes :/ brake lines are there and everything but no caliper or pads. Might just sell it or have new brakes installed it seems to do fine without them so far

You didn't say how big your boat was or if it was a single or tandem axle but my guess is that it is a tandem axle because I have never seen a single axle trailer that had brakes. In most cases the biggest issue with needing brakes on trailers is when making panic stops or going down steep hills, because the weight of the boat and trailer can push you beyond your normal stopping range and they can keep your trailer from fish tailing by lightly applying the brakes.

I do brakes, but Utah is a pretty expensive service call. In some states if the parts are there they have to work. I've never had anyone even ask about my boat trailers. Haul it up to Idaho and we'll discuss it while fishing the snake. Not enough water for a jetboat ride to the honey hole right now.

Sorry I guess I should have mentioned that, my boat is a 19.5 ranger. The trailer is a single axle but it has or HAD brakes. I haven't had any issues stopping but I always assumed it had brakes on it so I'll be driving a little more cautiously now. Dtay, thanks for the invite! I would imagine having you come down here would be an expensive service call haha. I'll see how this trip goes today, depending on how my vehicle does coming down the mountain I may not really worry about adding brakes on it. Will report when I get back in town. Thanks again for the replies!

Yea, that is likely the max length boat you can have on on single axle trailer and I bet that is why it had trailer brakes at one time. Good luck on your trip and hopefully your hubs have been serviced recently or we might be having another discussion[Wink].
