Turkey Hunting Clinic a Success
47 youngsters participated

Iron County – On a recent, sunny Saturday morning, vehicles filled with excited, beginning turkey hunters pulled into the parking area at the Parowan Front Wildlife Management Area.

By 8:30 a.m., most of those who would participate in the first Turkey Hunting Clinic held by the Division of Wildlife Resources in southwestern Utah had arrived at the registration site. The kids were filled with anticipation, excited about learning turkey-hunting skills from expert hunters.

After the 47 youth rotated through four different stations, where they learned about turkey habitat and biology and how to call turkeys, pattern a shotgun, and place turkey decoys and hunt with archery equipment, a brief panel session was held so instructors could take questions from the audience. Next, raffle prizes were awarded. Because Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) and the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) donated so many items, every child who participated won a raffle item.

The last item to be raffled was a guided turkey hunt, provided by SFW. Skyler Armstrong was ecstatic to win such a coveted prize.

Donnie Hunter with the Iron County Chapter of SFW says it was great to see the young hunters and their families learning about conservation and how to hunt turkeys. “It was incredible to see the youth learn about the great American tradition of hunting, gain a greater respect for nature and have fun in the process,” Hunter says.

Ron MacIntosh, representing the Cedar City Chapter of NWTF, says the audience was awesome. “The kids learned a great deal and enjoyed themselves,” MacIntosh says. “I’m excited for the chance I had to introduce these young hunters to the sport of hunting and assist them in becoming conservationists.”

“Our partnership with SFW and the NWTF made this event possible,” says Heather Talley, regional wildlife recreation coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. “The clinic was successful because these sportsmen groups are devoted to wildlife and they’re enthusiast about working with us.”
