Fishing Report: 8/8/12 to 8/15/12
. Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accommodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: Seas have been rougher last few days, since we did have a storm down south of us. We had a few big rollers coming ashore, stirred up by the storm. The water temperatures have been 85 to 86 on the Sea of Cortez side and 82 to 84 on the Pacific side and it seems to be just the way the fish like
WEATHER: Well the way to describe the weather is none other than Hot! Its August and we are having typical August weather. The past few days have changed a little with even some rain today and yesterday. Tuesdays weather was bad enough that many boats did not leave the dock. I know boats did go out today (Wednesday) and some were productive with fish. Off and on showers throughout the past 2 days, but before that it was just hot and humid.
BAIT: Caballito are in abundance this week with some Mackerel. The bait is at the standard 3$ a piece. Some frozen Ballyhoo have been found on the bait boats. Try and find fresh frozen and not refrozen.
BILLFISHING: The fishing is really good, and lots of Marlin are being caught from the Arch to the Golden Gate . The fish are taking live bait and lures. Our own (29 foot) Bob Marlin on Wednesday caught 4 Marlin and 2 Dorado and then on Thursday the boat got 2 Sailfish and 9 Dorado. The Marlin and Sailfish are even being caught from Pangas not to far off shore. The Blue Marlin are still active and some reports of up over the 300 pound mark have been reported. Dragging lures seem to be enticing the big Marlin. Really wide open as far as Stripped Marlin and Sailfish go, on both the Pacific and Sea of Cortez side, around the 1150 and 95 areas of Cabo. Havent heard any reports of Big Blacks this past week . I am sure in the next few weeks we will be more into the Black Marlin. In all reality the Bill fishing has been really good and it’s a great time to come to Cabo and experience catching your first Marlin. There is a very good chance you will land one, and have the trip of a life time.
TUNA: A few BigTuna in the 150 pound class were reported this past week. An angler on The Bob Marlin fought a huge Tuna, we estimate at 200 pounds, for 2 hours and a half before he broke free, right at the boat. We have been catching the Tuna 3 to 5 miles offshore around the Golden Gate area. There have been really good numbers of smaller Tuna caught, with most being caught on spreader bars and cedar plugs. So all in all the Tuna fishing is really good and we are have some great results as of lately.
DORADO: Lots of Dorado being caught for 12 to 16 pounds with some going up to 35 pounds. Most are being caught on live bait and we are even slow trolling cut skipjack strips. We are also having luck just trolling lures. The Dorado fishing has been good from the Solmar up to El Arco. Most of the smaller fish are being taken closer to shore while larger fish have been farther offshore. Look for the birds working or swooping down as this is an indicator of fish. Really the Dorado fishing has been good throughout the Cabo fishing ground both on the Pacific side all the way over to the Sea of Cortez.
WAHOO: I have heard lots of reports of being bit off by Wahoo as of lately. When they show up they are tough on out lures, if we aren’t using wire. We will lose lots of lures through the year because of this. We don’t use wire all the time cause the other fish wont bite out lines. Anyway they are around and we are hoping to land some nice Wahoo.
INSHORE: The inshore fishing has been really good also. On the pacific side we are seeing Dorado, Tuna and Rooster Fish. Lots of Skip Jacks also. Some Groupers and Amberjack reported being caught on Pacific side, off of Solmar. All the way to San Jose has been good inshore for Dorado and even some Marlin from Pangas.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don’t even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don’t even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don’t care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don’t have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat.
