Fishing Report - Vegas Wash/33 Hole Area and New Reel!
#1
Had a chance to get out late this afternoon in to early evening. Very windy and a bit rough heading out of the marina (LVBH) but not to bad once in the 33 Hole area.

Went to my current honey hole, The Bump, at around 5pm and fish were on right away. Mostly decent 2-4 pounders, a couple close to 5.

Had a big one on, I think. As I got it close to the surface is ran hard and snapped my line before the drag kicked in.

After a couple of weeks ago stripping my cheap Shakespeare reel on a 15 pounder, I purchased a Shimano Spirex 2500RD the other day and tried it out.

Beautiful reel, smooth and feels solid. But...

Honestly I do not like it. It flexes way too much when you have a decent size fish on on the downshaft of the reel.

It was quite a challenge even with a 5 pounder on the line. Made it very hards to reel in smooth. I am not impressed with it and I think it is going to go back to Bass Pro tomorrow. I may swap it for a Spirex 4500 and see if that is more sturdy. It is too bad, I love the reel's feel and build quality otherwise.

Got a few pics today, will post them tomorrow when I have more time.

PS. Just using a simple Carolina rig and cut sardines. Generally one piece in the middle for me, head and tail in to the water for chum and was busy in the bite from the moment I got there until I left around 8pm.

[cool]Way to go. I haven't had that kind of luck in the Hole in awhile. As far as reels go I use Shimano reels also. They are the Sahara 1500 and Symetre 2500. These guys work great. Caught loads of 2-4lbers on them and a 10lber on the Symetre. Another reel you may consider is the Penn Sargus 3000 or 4000. These are very strong all metal reels that will hold up in saltwater as well as fresh. Caught back to back 8lbers at Silverwood lake,Ca. on the 4000. I will be buying more of these.

If the funds allow it I picked up a Abu Garcia 6600 c4... First time I ever used a bait caster style reel but it gets down!!! I have snagged a couple decent fish at willow with it and had zero problems... Mine is strung with 20lb mono "fishing for trophies" and when I get a snag it's indestructible... Breaks the hook every time lol..

Thanks for the suggestion! I actually stopped by BPS today and returned the Shimano Spirex for an Abu Garcia Orra S 40.

Hopefully I will get a chance to try it out this week sometime (a whole week home and no travel, I should be able to sneak out some afternoon).

Really cranked on it hard at BPS and no play at from the rod on the down shaft so hopefully it will work great.

I really liked the Shimano Spirex, but when I tried a 4000 (I had a 2500) it had a ton of flex in it as well. I am sure for small or large mouth bass it would have been fine. Even for Walleye (we fish those up in Minnesota where I spend most of my time for work) that do not really fight too hard. But for dragging a fighting striper up from 50+ feet it just didn't do it for me.
