I was up fishing at rockport today and there was this guy getting ready to go out when i was coming in.. I shut my sled down about 30' out from the ramp and walked over to him and his snowmachine.. He said he just got it and this was his 1st time out.. I went up to get my truck and when i returned he was driving his snowmachine back very slowly.. He shut it down next to mine and said " Hay its leaking antifreeze can you help".. Well long story short we couldn't get it restarted.. So he backs his truck and trailer out on the ice so we can get it loaded.. Now he unhooks the trailer then drives back down and stops next to me.. I said well looks like your on foot.. He said "NOPE" Then He drives out on the ice about 400 yards turns south and heads down about 1/4 mile. I ran to my truck and grabbed my phone and started recording.. I don't know how to up load the video.. Any help there ?Well as i drove back on the west side he was still out there fishing.. I did manage to get 1 photo on the way back.. its from my phone so its not the best..
Update.. I loaded the video.. Also have seen many cars, trucks and even motorhomes on the ice in Mich.. Just never seen it out here.. Video will not upload.. Sorry

Last weekend at the ice party but there were trucks on the ice that was part of the vendors dropping things off. I'm not sure if it is legal or not but the ice was plenty thick enough to support them. You upload your video clip just like you do a pic. have you tried that yet? It should work unless there is a size limit. I uploaded one last week on the Off topic board:

We watched you all do that. Red Phaser, wasn't it?
There was a truck on the ice that night too. Just out there doing doughnuts and racing around.

What is it - 4 inches considered safe for peoples, and 8 inches safe for cars/trucks? That ice was purdy dang thick when we were there (thanks again for drilling those holes WH! I think my arms get older as ice season progresses!)
I still wouldn't do it. One soft spot is all it takes. And I'd be worried about having enough traction to move - even with AWD. Yesterday's mud-bogging gave me the willies! Thought for sure I had a date with a tree!
At least I had 'friends' with me. Nothing like getting stuck somewhere on your lonesome. It's pretty hard to push and drive at the same time. NOT like that's even happened to me - numerous times.
Reminds me of when I first got a 4WD vehicle and a friend put it to me - "just means you can go that much farther before you get stuck".

fishing4thehog was the one that let me use his power auger but I was glad to drill some holes for you guys. I agree, when the ice gets as thick as it is now up there, a manuel auger will kill you and it is one of those deals when you only drill that one hole before you want to give up. I think you are correct about what is safe to walk on and drive on.
