[fishin]bait casters are for the advanced fisherman. i will admit that its hard to get used to it but when you do its worth it. what you dont want is a backlash. what this is is when you cast and your lure hits the water but you spool keeps spinning that causes your line to get clumped up on the spool.to keep this from happining as bad is cast out as far as you can then take a little strip of duct tape or eletrical tape and put it on the spool this will keep it from not backlashing as far.

Got a couple of those. I use them for ice and cats. You don't need to be an advanced fisherman but you need to practice. Best used on boats with heavier lures and baits.I like the high speed retrieval and drag systems they offer. My advice is focus on thumbing the reel when casting and adjusting the spool tension so it just slowly pulls the line off the spool. Or simply buy a spinning reel instead, the quality is not as important to performance and less practice is needed.

[#005000]You could do the tape thing , but I suggest that you learn the thumb trick with undoing backlashing. Go to video and type in thumb trick undo backlash. You could also find it on YouTube.com . [/#005000]

Shimano makes a nice Bait casting reel with variable speed retrieval. I have had mine for years. Even though they have been around for a long time, they are always a conversation starter on the pond or lake for some reason.

The ability to apply the right amount of thumb pressure is primarily a function of practice, but you can also reduce backlashes if you set the reel's braking system properly. Most baitcasting reels have centrifugal braking systems. The brakes are activated by the spinning action of the reel's spool. The faster the spool spins, the more tension the brakes apply to it. Think of it as a sort of an automatic thumb.
