Spawning Help! I tried everything!!
#1
Hey Guys

I was down at our local club last night (May 5th), its called Ranger Rod & Gun Club, (LEHIGH VALLEY PA), Its a very large Limestone Quarry Pit. Its mainly a trout lake, but since trout are not my favorite fish, I go for the Largemouth there. Last year, I caught multiple 3-6 pound bass.

Now for my question, I never bass fished it this early in the year, BUT all along the shoreline, (Keep in mind there isnt a spot shallower then 50feet, but there are "shelfs around the perimeter of the lake. Bass are spawning here, and they are hanging out in pairs, and these fish are 6 pounds plus! everyonce in a while they would rub against eachother and float to the top, and these fish were "Cabelas/BPS Aquarium worthy fish.

I threw Gizit Tubes, Netbait Craws, Multiple Jigs, Cranks, Lizards, Minnows, LIVE BLUEGILL (I saw one bass chasing a bluegill), Meal worms, and nightcrawlers.

Although after bouncing a tube in front of the bass he finally gave it a "taste" but spit it out.

Any tips to land these monsters?

It's frustrating, I feel your pain. I went to a local pond yesterday and spotted a bass clearing out a bed. I threw a tube, senko, dropshot, x-rap that suspended right over the top of his bed-NOTHING! I watched him puff up and literally blow my bait or sinker off his bed. The exact opposite of what he is supposed to do!!! I ended up cutting a senko in half (watermelon) and dragged it on his bed and he slammed it, go figure.
I found another bed and used a weightless texas rigged hula grub, one of my own [Smile], and the action on the skirt was amazing. The bass went off it's bed and attacked it before I could even flip the bail. Those were the only two bass I caught but many were on beds.
All I can say is keep at it, you will find the right bait or you will eventually make them Angry and trigger a bite. I don't want to sound preachy but when you do catch a bass on a bed please release it, they will go back to their bed and continue to spawn.

No doubt I throw bass back, trout are for eatn [Wink], besides its not bass season here anyway.

When I was dragging the tube through, they would pick it up, but spit it

Also I went down for a few mins before work yesterday, I saw one bass, had to be 5 pounds, and one swimming next to him, that was at least twice the size, had to be 23-24" and at least 9lbs. Id kill to hook him

I’m no bass fisherman (but I am trying to be this year) but speaking from the point of science try fishing them with something that represents a threat rather them a meal. Spawning fish are very territorial and if your presentation looks like it might be trying to invade the nest the bass should strike defensively. I don’t think they feed then they are actually on the beds. Just a thought

Thats what happened to be i had a live bluegill on my hook, the male bass that was building his bed gave it a kiss like literally is what it looked like then my bait fish freaked out.

Yea with spawning bass you want to threaten their bed, plastic lizards, crawfish etc anything that would eat the fry.

Or irritate the hell out of them and they bite to remove the irritation, Buzzbait over and over, super large plastics thrown right on the bed and twitched etc...

The weather here in the Mid-South is messing up my spawn bassin' right now and it's really irritating me! Hell I might go fishing in the rain today....[Wink]
