I know the limited permits are for April and I was hoping for some success stories. I will be hunting next month for turkeys and looking for any help that I can get. My daughter is not old enough to hunt yet but it's all she talks about...we were watching a turkey hunting show on the outdoor channel and when the guy shot the turkey it started flopping around like crazy. She excitedly laughed out loud. I'm raising a huntin' fool or a sharpshooter, I'll take either.

I bagged my first turkey on Friday. Just a jake but I called him and 3 of his friends in by myself. Not bad for a first time turkey hunter.
******STORY******
I hunted last weekend and didn't hear a peep from anything resembling a turkey. There was lots of sign though so I figured I was just a little early.
*cut to Friday*
I get off work early and drive to the turkey woods I planned to hunt. Once I got there and got down to the the area I had planned to hunt I immediately heard a gobble. I set up quickly in an opening and gave some less than stellar yelps on my diaphragm call.(I couldn't get the call wet enough due to the hike in and the fact that I was getting excited from actually hearing a gobble)
I gave a couple purrs on my push button call to cover up my unacceptable yelps on the diaphragm. Then I heard a double gobble and it was on! I waited about 20 minutes and let out 3 soft yelps on the diaphragm call that I had finally managed to get wet enough to use. I was answered by 3 gobblers all cutting each other off. They were excited and I was getting pretty excited myself.
They gobbled sporadically for the next half hour but I kept my composure and didn't answer, I was letting them sweat it out.
Then I let out three more soft yelps. They went quiet for about 20 minutes and I started to get a little worried. However, I kept quiet. I didn't want them to think I was the more desperate one. Finally I heard a gobble and it sounded like it was just the other side of a line of Junipers to my right. I let out three more soft yelps and shouldered my gun.
About 15 minutes later I saw the first jake move into the clearing. He had barely a visible nub of a beard. I probably would have taken him but he didn't stick around in the clearing long enough to get a bead on him. He was followed by two more Jakes with bright red heads but no visible beard. I told my self if any more came through the clearing with a visible beard I had to take him because I figured the turkey train was nearing the caboose. Sure enough, in came another jake with a beard just a touch longer than the first bird's. He took two steps into the clearing, looked directly at me, and I pulled the trigger. He dropped like a rock and didn't flop once.
I didn't realize it while everything was going down but when I got up to the bird I realized I was shaking pretty bad. I don't think I have been that excited since I bagged my first goose when I was 12. Ha ha!
